Being one of only a few original castles still left in Japan, mostly untouched by wars and natural disasters, Mastusmoto castle with its unique black style , has always been on my list to visit! We've been to a fair few castles in Japan (mostly reconstructions) and you can immediately feel the difference inside. It was freezing!

Its surprisingly well maintained on the inside, and because it's mostly original you don't find the typical souvenir shops at the top like with the other castles. The inside is a bit of a tricky climb and definitely not for anyone with active injuries. The last few staircases are extremely steep and narrow. We went in winter so the surrounding areas were quite bleak but I think it will look really beautiful in spring time!
Matsumoto city in itself is also really nice. We like most of Nagano with its mountainous areas, don't know why but it just feels nice!
